Administrator Consultant At each VA facility, one or more individuals will fill the role of Administrator Consultant. An Administrator Consultant can perform the same functions as a Consultant, but has the additional responsibility of managing all ECWeb users, as well as all ECWeb data reports, at his or her facility.
Case An ethics consultation that pertains to an active clinical case.
CASES A systematic, step-by-step process for performing ethics consultations that was developed by VA's National Center for Ethics in Health Care. The steps in the CASES process are:
  1. Clarify the consultation request
  2. Assemble the relevant information
  3. Synthesize the information
  4. Explain the synthesis
  5. Support the consultation process
Consultant ECWeb users assigned the Consultant role are responsible for conducting ethics consultations, and for documenting the consultations by entering and maintaining pertinent information in the ECWeb database.
Evaluator ECWeb users assigned the Evaluator role are responsible for performing tasks to gather feedback on completed ethics consultations and for ensuring that the results of these evaluations are documented in the ECWeb database.
Non-Case An ethics consultation that does not pertain to an active clinical case. Consults related to patient cases that are hypothetical or historical (i.e., non-active) are Non-Case consultations. Non-Case consultations can also include:

  • Interpreting policy relating to ethics in health care
  • Reviewing documents from a health care ethics perspective
  • Providing ethical analysis on organizational ethics questions or hypothetical or historical questions
Role Each individual who is authorized to use ECWeb is assigned one or more roles. Each role (Consultant, Administrator Consultant, and Evaluator) has a different set of responsibilities in the ECWeb application.
