ECWeb - A Quality Improvement Tool for Ethics Consultation

"My organization is interested in taking our ethics consultation service to the next level."

The National Center for Ethics in Health Care developed ECWeb to document, track, evaluate, manage, and continuously improve ethics consultation quality. The Web-based software program serves to improve the quality of ethics consultations in several ways. First, it provides and reinforces a systematic approach to ethics consultation. It also allows consultants to produce comprehensive, standardized records of their ethics consultation data to serve for reference, reporting, and quality improvement purposes. ECWeb creates a database of ethics information and knowledge that serves as a valuable resource for staff to use in addressing future ethical concerns. The program provides a number of useful tools including full-text search, data reports, and powerful sorting capabilities to help the ethics consultant quickly locate needed information. It also provides a mechanism to gather standardized feedback data from participants about the consultation process.

The ECWeb online learning module was developed to help ethics consultants learn about the ECWeb program, its uses and functionality. Although the ECWeb program is not yet available outside the VA health care system’s firewall, the ECWeb learning module is available to everyone on the Internet.
