Barbara L. Chanko, RN, MBA: Health Care Ethicist

Barbara L. Chanko, RN, MBA, received a BS in Nursing from CUNY-Hunter College/Bellevue School of Nursing, an MBA in Health Care Administration from the CUNY-Baruch College/Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and a certificate in Bioethics and the Medical Humanities from the Montefiore Medical Center/New York University. Prior to joining VA in 1988, Ms. Chanko worked as a psychiatric nurse and in the health care insurance industry. At the VA New York Harbor Health Care System, Ms. Chanko was the Administrative Officer for the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service, the Staff Assistant to the Medical Center Director, and, for 10 years, the Health Systems Specialist to the Chief of Staff. In 2001, she joined NCEHC, where her work focuses on developing and implementing national standards for performing ethics consultation and on IntegratedEthics. She is an Associate of the Division of Medical Ethics, Department Population Health, NYU School of Medicine, and serves as faculty for the medical students’ ethics courses.
