Claire W. Maklan, MPH, PhD: Executive Officer
Claire Maklan, MPH, PhD, is an experienced social science researcher who has conducted studies of subjective health status and aging, in academia and the private sector, as well as Congressionally-requested assessments of life-sustaining technologies and advance directives. Her doctoral work at the University of Michigan focused on gerontology and the then-emerging sub-specialty of geriatrics. She is an experienced administrator and manager of major programs of health services research in two Federal agencies, serving as Deputy Director of the Center for Medical Effectiveness Research in the PHS Agency for Health Care Policy and Research and, most recently, as Chief of Scientific Development in VA's Health Services Research and Development Service. Dr. Maklan's publications include original research articles, book chapters, conference proceedings, editorials, letters-to-the-editor, and poetry. She sees her role as Executive Officer for the National Center as an opportunity to "help make ethics happen."
