The National Center for Ethics in Health Care serves as VA's authoritative resource for addressing the complex ethical issues that arise in patient care, health care management, and research.

We provide information, education, and consultation and oversee nationwide programs and quality improvement projects to help health care practitioners and administrators to understand and apply health care ethics standards.

We also provide information to Veterans, patients, and their families to help them understand ethical issues that relate to their health care experience.

New!I’ve Been Chosen as A Health Care Agent – Now What?” is the latest in our podcast series for Veterans and their loved ones, titled Dialed In: Helping Veterans Take Control of Their Health Care. VA encourages every Veteran to name a health care agent – someone to make health care decisions on their behalf if they become too ill to do so. This podcast discusses how to fulfill the role of health care agent,  and decisions you might have to make.

New! Issue 38 of IntegratedEthics in Action – Implementing Signature Informed Consent for Opioid Therapy, Medical Librarians in Ethics Consultation, Ethical Framework for Prioritizing HCV Treatment, New Podcast Series for Veterans, New Ethics Consultation Fellowship Program, Virtual Ethics Quality Improvement Meeting, New EC:BtB Modules Released

NCEHC announces the second edition of Ethics Consultation: Responding to Ethics Questions in Health Care. This primer establishes VA standards for health care ethics consultation, one of the three core functions of IntegratedEthics. The revised edition includes new material and refinements added since the first edition was released in 2007, many of which are based on experience and feedback from ethics consultants.

NCEHC announces the publication of a new EthicsRx, Signature Informed Consent Workflows: "Gurney Consent." EthicsRx is a recurring brief publication about health care ethics issues affecting the care of Veterans in VHA. Each issue provides interpretation of and guidance on the implementation of a VHA policy for which the National Center for Ethics in Health Care is responsible, or to which it contributes substantially. The goal of EthicsRx is to clarify policy, clear up misconceptions, and fill gaps in knowledge.
